Windy City Ribs Festival
| Date: |
Friday to Sunday, August 14-16, 2009 |
| Time: |
Friday - 4pm to 10pm | Saturday & Sunday - Noon to 10pm |
| Location: |
Union Park (1501 W. Randolph St.) | Chicago |
It may have 'Windy City' in its name, but the inaugural Windy City Ribs Festival will really be about eight local and not-so-local vendors (aka "ribbers") slugging it out for slab lovers' affections. (Festival-goers will be able to vote for their faves.)
In addition to lauded local ribbers, the festival will also feature those from Wisconsin and Texas. All seven have won numerous awards. And all claim to serve up the best ribs and sauce in the universe.
The city ribbers will be Robinson's Ribs and Old Town's Fireplace Inn. Then there's former Chicago restaurateur's Tom Ferguson's Chicago BBQ Company (based in Burr Ridge, Ill.), and Uncle Bub's BBQ from suburban Westmont. And the Famous Dave's chain will be calling in its special BBQ forces team from Plymouth, Minn., to show what they've got at the festival.
The out-state ribbers will be The BBQ Company hailing from Oconomowoc, Wis. and Joey's Texas Thunder making the trek north from Euless, Texas.

Friday's Headliner: Wailers
|
Together with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they've notched up over 20 chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. Outside of their groundbreaking work with Marley, the Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear.
Their nucleus formed in 1969, when Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh recruited the Barrett brothers -- bassist Aston 'Family Man' and drummer Carly -- from Lee Perry's Upsetters to play on hits such as Lively Up Yourself, Trenchtown Rock, Duppy Conqueror and many more. Inspired by Rastafari and their ambitions of reaching an international audience, this is the line-up that pioneered roots rock reggae, and signed to Island Records in 1971.
Subsequent Wailer lineups have revolved around Family Man, who is widely regarded as one of the
world's greatest bass players. Modest and unassuming, he was present on all of those unforgettable performances by Bob Marley & The Wailers from the '70s. He and lead singer Elan Attias form the
main axis of the current Wailers -- a group that's one of the last, great reggae institutions, yet which refuses to live off past glories.

Saturday's Headliner: Cowboy Mouth
|
Cowboy Mouth is New Orleans rock n' roll. Annually presenting roughly 200 shows per year, releasing nearly a dozen records, and featured on TV shows and radio stations everywhere, Cowboy Mouth has been seen and heard by millions of fans worldwide. For more than 15 years, the members of Cowboy Mouth have preached and shouted at the top of their lungs the joys of being alive and the joys of being in and from New Orleans, sharing a slice of Mardi Gras heaven with fans around the world.
The band's 11 album releases include two records on MCA, one on Atlantic and several on their own Cowboy Mouth Records label. So far, the band has enjoyed domestic sales of over 450,000 units. But the album sales pale in comparison to the number of tickets the band sells to their live events. Cowboy Mouth shows are legendary, and have been witnessed by more than 8 million fans to date. Always on the road, they've toured several times with their friends in Hootie and the Blowfish, BareNaked Ladies, Sister Hazel and Better Then Ezra.
